Are you wondering how to register to vote in the United States?
IT’S NOT TOO LATE TO REGISTER FOR THE GENERAL ELECTION!
In many states you are able to register to vote up to 30 days before an election. In many cases you also have to re-register if you did not vote in the past two general elections.
Registering to vote is free and easy to do, but in the United States it is the responsibility of the voter to register themselves. In general, the requirements for voting are U.S. citizenship, residency in the state you are registering to vote in, 18+ years of age, and mental competency. Many states prohibit convicted Felons from voting, however not all. VoteSmart.org has a very good webpage for finding out specific details for voter registration in your state. Alternatively you can use the official federal government website for voter registration information in your state, vote.usa.gov.
Many states allow you to register to vote online (links to each state’s online voter registration page are provided below). You can also register to vote in person (typically a county clerk or DMV office) or mail in a national voter registration form in every state except Wyoming, North Dakota, New Hampshire, and U.S. territories (Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa and Guam). You can download the form directly from the U.S. Election Assistance Commission in many languages here. (Direct Link to English Form PDF)
No matter how you register to vote, it is advised that you request or save a copy of your registration receipt and bring it to the polls on election day.
